Introduction

Hello, I'm a Senior at the University of Oklahoma majoring in Biology. I'm a pre-dent student and I'm working on taking the DAT this semester. Pretty stressed out over it, but hopefully this class will take my mind off of all the biology and chemistry stuff. My favorite class last semester was Music in Film. The only class I ever took at a university that made us watch movies. I had a lot of fun, because I got to re-watch some of my favorite movies and actually listen to the awesome music in it. The not so fun part was the watching then-innovative now-janky CG works of King Kong. That was honestly pretty painful. My favorite movie after taking that class changed to Inception. I enjoyed the movie when I first watched it, but I never realized how epic the music was until that class.

I have a cat named Kitai and she can be a handful sometimes but she's a very sweet cat most of the time. I named her after a character in young-adult book I enjoyed reading with a friend of mine in high school. I regret that every now and again because she gets pretty wild sometimes just like her namesake.

Kitai falling asleep while I'm trying to study. Picture taken April 2020.

Other than my cat, listening to music and watching Netflix is my way of relaxing. I'm not too picky about music so I honestly just end up listening to pre-made playlists on Spotify. I've run out of things I really want to watch on Netflix as well so some recommendations would be nice. Writing this introduction made me realize how I don't really have a hobby that I really enjoy. Even now I can't really think of anything that I want to try. Maybe I'll pick up reading through The Game of Thrones book series since the finale was such a disappointment.
Anyways, I hope this semester goes smoothly and that everyone on our campus stay healthy.

  1. Hi Shaun! The composer for Inception is one of my all-time favorites: Hans Zimmer! He has done so many amazing scores; my favorite is the one he did for Interstellar... and then someone took part of that score and combined it with an old lecture by Alan Watts, so cool! Here it is; you'll recognize that amazing Zimmer sound: Life From Above, and Beyond. And your Kitai is adorable... there are not any cats in the epics, but there is a really cool story about the elephant-headed god Ganesha and a cat: Ganesha and the Cat link ... and the goddess of childbirth rides a cat: Shashthi link ... and if you were into Game of Thrones, I think you will enjoy the epics, especially the Mahabharata. No dragons: but then maybe you could add some dragons when you write your own stories!

  2. Hi, Shaun!

First off, was the Music in Film class taught by Dr. Michael Lee in the School of Music? If not, I know that he taught a course very similar to that. He is a wonderful professor and I wish I could take his classes over and over again.

That aside, cats, music, and Netflix are definitely things that we have in common! Kitai is very adorable! On your bit about hobbies, I have and continue to struggle with that concept. I think we find ourselves so busy sometimes that we forget about recreational activities. But in reality, they are just as, if not more, important to our lives than our work. It's good to take time for ourselves every now and again!

    Cheers,
    Chris

  3. Hey Shaun! I hope everything is going well in regards to studying for the DAT, my good friend just recently took it and I am certain he is glad to be done with it. Interstellar is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time as well, partly just because of the amazing soundtrack. A good show I would recommend on Netflix is Dirty Money, I can't really describe it, but you'll just have to check it out. Your cat is super cute, although i'm allergic, i'd take my chances petting it. Nice to meet you!!

  4. Hey Shaun!

Your introduction was really cool. Your cat seems really nice. I am also a biology major, but I am pre-med! The Music in Film class you talked about in your introduction seems really interesting! I might have to look into it for an elective. I also agree that science courses get a bit annoying, so we have to enjoy the unique courses like this!

  6. Hi, Shaun!
Kitai is super cute! I grew up with cats and I really miss them! I also love watching Netflix in my spare time, I watched Game of Thrones as well but I haven’t watched the last two because I’m scared of how bad I heard the last one is!

  7. Hi Shaun! I am also a Biology major but I am pre-med and just recently took my MCAT! Goodluck on the DAT.. these standardized tests are so stressful that I hope neither of us have to retake it a second time! Your cat is super cute by the way.. I am not really a cat person but I can admit when a cat is cute! I will be checking back to you introduction post to see if anyone has any good Netflix recommendations because I am also in need of a new show to watch!

  8. Hey Shaun,
Nice to meet you! I am also a Senior biology major and pre dentistry student. I really recommend DAT Bootcamp if you are preparing to take the DAT this semester. Like you, my favorite class has nothing to do with my major and is good to get your mind off of biology sometimes. I have never seen Inception but have hear good things about the film. I may have to give it a try, is it on netflix? I look forward to reading your stories this semester.

  9. Hi Shaun! It is so nice to meet you. First of all, your cat is precious! How sweet! I also think that it is so cool that you are a biology major, I know dental school is pretty competitive... so good luck with that. I am excited to learn with you this semester, and I hope that your test goes well and you get the results that you want. Enjoy the rest of your week!

  10. Hi Shaun,
You have officially made me want to take the class Music in Film now because it sounds so fun! Kitai is also adorable and I love that you named her after something that inspired you. I kind of envy you for the fact that you are not picky about your music because sometimes, if I can't find the right song I want to listen to, it can ruin my mood for a second!
    Have an awesome day!

  11. Hi Shaun!
I think the worst thing about being an avid Netflix watcher is that you run out of things to watch so quickly! I have the same problem! Your cat is absolutely adorable! I think it's so funny how the names we give our pets serve as this sort of self-fulfilling prophecy! I have a chocolate lab who is still a puppy, we named her Coco, but we call her Coco Loco. Her name fits her well because she is a crazy and energetic little pup! I look forward to reading your stories!

  12. Hello Shaun!
Immediately after reading that your cat was named Kitai, I thought you had named her that because the name phonetically sounds like 'kitty'. Now I feel simple minded because that was clearly not your intention haha. I feel you on the stress, I'm also a senior and a science major, and the pressure and stress really does hit different when your'e a senior. But hey, good luck to us in the future with graduation and grad school!

  13. Hi Shaun,
It was so nice to read about you. Biology major is so tough, I assume but good for you. I'm not the biggest cat fan but wow Kitai is so cute. I love listening to music and watching Netflix as well, it helps me relax and just chillout. I can't wait to read the stories you decide to create for this class. Goodluck the rest of the semester!!

  14. Hey Shaun, I think it is awesome that you have decided to study something that you are passionate about, despite the challenges that may come along with it. Your cat is adorable and looks very relaxed, unlike how I am feeling around the midterm season. I am the same way when it comes to music and tend to search what genre I am feeling in the moment and Spotify usually gives me pretty good choices.

  15. Hi Shaun,
Music in Film sounds like a very interesting and fun class. I also ran out of things to watch on Netflix and recently started watching shows through Amazon Prime. In case you didn't know, there is a 6 month free trial and 50% discount on Amazon Prime for students. I am not sure what your interests really are, but I like the show Burn Notice (on Amazon) and enjoy video games and firearms in terms of hobbies. Also, I like your cat!

  16. Hi Shaun,
I'm a senior too. I also have a cat, or three. Kitai is very beautiful. Listening to music is a hobby of mine as well, but I must say I can't relate to listening to pre-made Spotify playlists. Like, sure, sometimes, but don't you have favorite artists or albums? I tend to be very passionate about my favorites. I really love Khalid, and would definitely recommend listening to his albums. I am the kind of person who thinks albums should be listened to in order but I know a lot of people prefer to just shuffle it.
I didn't watch GOT but I read the first 3 books and started the 4th. The first book was good, I don't remember the other two much, it's been like 7 years. I don't know what the tv show is like but I will warn you that the GOT books have many, many different povs, so that's something you'll have to get used to. Also, (I think this happens in the show too) the author likes to kill off characters. I think the end of book 3 is when he kills like 5-10 main characters. So yeah. Good luck if you pick them up, maybe I will try them again sometime.

  17. Hello Shaun, I am also a senior at The University of Oklahoma. I am glad to hear that you are in the process of going further into your education. I can tell that you are determined and am sure that you will get to your goals. I have many friends that is also Pre-dent just like you and I know that the DAT exam can be hard, but there are many resources to help you with that. I wish you all the best in your studies.

  18. Hello again Shaun, it looks like I have you again for commenting. I see that you are a cat person, which is not my favorite. I would say that I am a dog person, I have never gotten myself to like cats as pets. Aside from this fun fact, I did run out of shows to watch on Netflix, so I might take you up on your suggestions.

  19. Hi Shaun.
Upon reading your introduction, I found out that you and I have a lot in common! I am also a senior graduating in May but I am a microbiology major and just recently changed from Pre-dental to pre-pharmacy! I ultimately decided not to do hand-on surgeries but best of luck to you I hope everything in the future goes your way!
